Bachelor student - Intern H2023

Research internship: Remote predictive mapping of gossans in volcanic terrain

During my bachelor's degree, I had the opportunity to do an internship for the T-MARS project in the winter of 2023. During this internship, I was able to confirm my interest in geology and the fascinating world of remote sensing, which were born at the beginning of my university career when I discovered the bachelor's degree.

During my internship, I participated in the spatial analysis of the Expedition Fiord study area on Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut, in preparation for the T-MARS field campaign in the summer of 2023.

I experimented with various WorldView-3 and PRISMA satellite image processing techniques in order to identify the gossans present and to determine which areas should be visited first. I was also able to test on the South Fiord region the remote predictive mapping method adapted to the MARS (McGill Arctic Research Station) region that was developed by my colleague Stéphanie Lachance. In addition, I also explored different object-oriented classification methods. Thanks to these different methods, I could produce a new geological map of the South Fiord area that is more accurate than the existing one.

Internship under the supervision of Pre Myriam Lemelin, January to April 2023.
